[comp.sys.ibm.ps2.hardware] Looking for more hard disk space...

newbie@inmet.UUCP (Chris Newbold) (07/11/90)

I have an IBM PS/2 55sx with the 60mb hard disk, which is stuffed to
the gills (360K free, with 16MB of ZIP files inwhich much of my stuff is
archived...). I need more space. What options are there? Since there is
no more room inside the machine, I either have to scap the current drive
or go for an external.

I believe that the current drive is ESDI, and I know it's a 3 1/2" job.
I haven't had much luck locating something larger that would fit, like
a 120mb 3 1/2" ESDI. Does such a beast exist? How much is it gonna
cost me? Is it really ESDI?

My other thought was to go for an external thing. This could have two
advantages: 1, it would let me use a 5 1/4" drive, which would appear to
be cheaper, and 2, I could get a SCSI interface so that I could also
move the drive over to my Compaq 386. Can this be done, assuming that they
both have SCSI adapters?

Any suggestions would be appriciated. e-mail preferable to posting, just
'cause of the mass of net traffic in these groups (your response might
get burried!). Thanx again.

Why not move the relatively slow and less used floppy drive to an
external enclosure and smaller power supply, and install the
more critical component, the hard drive, inside the case?
