I previously posted a question regarding broken SIMM sockets. I've been able to get them to hold my 1Mx9 SIMMs adequately, I believe, and I do know they'll hold my 256Kx9's OK. I took my 1Mx9's to Fry's where they tested them, and found one to be bad. I bought a replacement, and had just walked out the door when I realized that it wouldn't physically fit in my computer. My motherboard puts the SIMMs in the front, toward the left, around where all IBM PC's, XT's, and AT's have had their DIPs. The SIMMs are oriented front-to-back, and the front corner just goes under a metal part of the case where the plastic board-holders (for full-length boards) plug into. 256Kx9 SIMMs will fit without any problem. About a year ago, my brother gave me 4 1Mx9 SIMMs, which I used without problem until a few days ago, when one went bad, as I've mentioned. They have notches in both upper corners. The notches are 1/8" squares with one rounded corner cut out of the upper corners of the SIMMs. They make the height of the ends of the SIMMs the same as the height of a 256Kx9 SIMM. I only really need less than a 1/16" square cut away from just one of the corners to fit the SIMM. The one Fry's sold me didn't have such notches, and the components manager, who orders these, said that he's never seen any with notches before. I also talked to a friend of a friend, who moonlights selling clones, and he says he's never seen them. Now I don't really feel like buying SIMMs and doing surgery on them, or doing surgery on my case, so has anybody ever seen SIMMs with these notches before, and does anybody know where I can get them for a reasonable price? The SIMMs I have certainly weren't made for my computer or anything. Andrew Lee alee@portia.stanford.edu
