[comp.sys.ibm.ps2.hardware] 3rd Party ESDI drives in Mod 80

root@westech.UUCP (Superuser) (02/07/91)

We would like to add a third party ESDI drive to a PS/2 Mod 80. The
drive we have is a Maxtor 4170E. We have successfully low level formatted
the drive on another PC and used it with no problems. When we try it
on the Mod 80 (by doing ^A at the Reference Disk Main Menu followed by
low level format and/or factory prep) it refuses to format or recognize
the disk even though it correctly calculates the size. Does anyone know
of a way to do this. Thanks in advance.

We had the same problems. We tried to install a Micropolis HD in
am IBM PS/2 Mod.80. After calling to several companies we received the
following hint:

Try the ONTRACK DISK MANAGER PS/2 Version 4.0

We tried and it worked quite well.
The disk manager is not public domain, but it's not very expensive.
Be carefull, don't partition the disk with the disk manager, only
low level format! (same with high level format)

Good luck!

Andreas and Fritz.
