[comp.sys.ibm.ps2.hardware] Here's some info on the MCA Hercules Graphics Station

timur@seas.gwu.edu (The Time Traveler) (04/09/91)

I just called Hercules (800-532-0600) at asked them about their MCA
Graphics Station. Here's what I got:

It will be releaseed at the end of this week. List price is $1395.
Now, unlike the ISA version, this comes with 1MB of Video RAM **AND**
1MB of DRAM. The ISA version is expandable only to 3MB, (1MB VRAM
and 2MB DRAM), but the MCA version can go up to 9MB! (1MB VRAM and
8MB DRAM).

It does not include VGA (i.e. it uses VGA pass-through). This means
that you should have VGA on the motherboard (like PS/2's) or somewhere
else.

These are the only differences between the ISA and MCA versions.

It uses the same software drivers as the ISA version. The Windows 3.0
driver is already out, but the OS/2 driver is still in development.
They are having someone else develop it, they said.

The card is also 16-bit. Since the ISA version can be either 16- or
8-bits, it's too bad they couldn't make the MCA card 32- or 16-bits.
Now that would make it the Graphics Card From Hell.

I called one mail-order place to see if they would stock it. They said
yes, but they won't have a price for it for another two weeks. I
assume the same applies to most of the other places.

BTW, if anyone in the Washington, D.C. area is considering getting one
of these or a NEC 4D monitor, let me know. We could go in double,
and probably save a bundle of money.
