I think I just brought home my 50Z from the repair shop to make a planter out of it. Thinking it could never happen to me, I let the warranty lapse and no one ever approached me about a service contract so I never thought of it until after it was too late. The system will go no further than the trying to access the floppy. No errors, no beeps, no motors, just a blank screen and a steady yellow light. It does do its memory count and visit both the floppy and hard drive to run the motors. My local repair shop states that it is a logic problem and wants too much to fix it. They want to replace the whole system board. The price they are asking is too much for what the system is worth if I sold it for parts. My question is, where can I get a system board and repair it myself? Or is there someone out there that can fix it for less than IBM wants? Do I have any other options? I was planning to upgrade to at least a '386 or SLC within the year, so spending much money on this is not worth it to me. But it would be nice to have it for DOS and VGA. I'm unhappy enough with the lack of availability of Microchannel hardware that I don't think I'll ever buy another PS/2. Feel free to post or respond via e-mail. Jim Peters jpeters@bbn.com
