[comp.sys.ibm.ps2.hardware] Low Level formatting on Model 30

jayh@ms.uky.edu (Jay Hofacker) (06/26/91)

How do I perform a low level format on a standard PS/2 Model 30 hard drive?
I can't find the hard drive bios to do a "g=xx00:5" in debug like on an XT/AT,
and the setup disk doesn't seem to have anything about low-level formating.
Are there any shareware programs that will perform a low-level on the Model 30?

According to the text file that came with my disk optimizer (OpTune),
it said:

"The micro-channel PS/2 computers released by IBM after April, 1988,
do not allow user programs to change their interleave setting. There-
fore, the Tune-Disk function will abort with an error message if you
attempt to run it on one of these machines. This is not a serious
problem since these high performance machines are always set to the correct
interleave."

Could this also apply to your machine?

Several people have suggested hitting Control-A from the first menu of the
configuration disk. I have tried this on both the configuration disk and the
advanced diagnostics disk but nothing happens, the ^A is appearently only for
the '286 and higher PS/2s. Will programs such as SpinRite II or SpeedStor
work safely on a Model 30?
