To Whom it May Concern: I have subscribed to Bionaut in the hopes of getting addresses for some scientists with whom I would like to correspond by E-Mail. However, I still have no idea how to retrieve data from the database. Could anyone help me with this? Keith Wycoff The Noble Foundation Ardmore, OK

Hmmmmm.... I have already written about LDBASE in BioBit No 12 As a gentle intoduction to networking and so that I do not have to upload the instructions once again into BIONAUT you can send a mail message to the following address: NETSERV@EMBL.BITNET Leave the subject line blank and in the main body of the mail message write the following line. GET DOC:BIOBIT.12 You will then receive an intoduction to using LDBASE from a BITNET site. If you want to jump ahead and get the programmes for BITNET sites then you can issue the following commands "interactively". o For VM/SP CMS systems: - TELL LISTSERV AT FINHUTC GET LDBASE EXEC - TELL LISTSERV AT FINHUTC GET LSVIUCV MODULE o For VAX/VMS systems: - SEND LISTSERV@FINHUTC GET LDBASE COM %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% %% Robert Harper %% HARPER@FINFUN %% HARPER@CC.HELSINKI.FI %% -=ROB=- %% CSC Finland %% Bitnet %% Internet %% %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Hello Keith. There is a LISTDB MEMO available from most LISTSERVS which will give you all the information you will need to utilize LDBASE from BITNET sites or make up BATCH queries to be sent from INTERNET sites There are two ways that you can get this documentation. From an INTERNET site you would send MAIL to LISTSERV@FINHUTC.BITNET Leave the subject line blank and on the first line of the main body of the mail message write the following: GET LISTDB MEMO INFO and send your mail off in about an hour or so you should get the document... after your mail has been processed. Alternatively from a BITNET site you can use the "quick and dirty" interactive method. On a VAX SEND LISTSERV@FINHUTC GET LISTDB MEMO INFO will do the same trick but you will get the document much quicker. In the near future I will run a search on the people who have registered on BIONAUT to get some statistics... I hope you will have cracked the mysteries of searching before that.
