I got some mail asking me about the CPQ NAMES on BITNET. It would appear that Chris Condon's "BITNET for the Complete Idiot" might be a timely posting to Bionaut since it is a classic document on what you can do on Bitnet... and for you inquisitive souls with access to UNIX then you can use the FINGER command to acheive the same results as CPQ NAMES on BITNET. For example if I want to check who is on GENBANK.BIO.NET I can finger them from Finland. I would appear that Dave Kristofferson is such a busy man that he has to have two sessions running at the same time:-) sun4 /csc/harper 5> finger @genbank.bio.net [genbank.bio.net] Login Name TTY Idle When Where ryals Julie Ryals p0 2:53 Thu 07:56 ig-tipa.ig.com lear Eliot p1 22: Tue 15:35 molto.ig.com nina Nina Robinson p2 1:01 Thu 06:31 poppy.ig.com consult IntelliGenetics Cons p3 5:42 Thu 06:32 poppy.ig.com lynch Conrad Lynch p4 Tue 14:34 cell.lanl.gov will Will Nelson p5 23 Wed 07:58 sparky.bio.net rdiaz Ron Diaz p6 5 Thu 09:16 yoda.ig.com kristoff David Kristofferson p7 2 Thu 10:23 karyon.bio.net will Will Nelson p8 3:36 Wed 07:51 sparky.bio.net kristoff David Kristofferson p9 4 Thu 10:23 karyon.bio.net nguyen Tan Nguyen pb 6 Thu 11:44 allegro.bio.net %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% %% Robert Harper %% HARPER@FINFUN %% HARPER@CSC.FI %% -=ROB=- %% Supercomputer %% Bitnet %% Internet %% %% Centre Finland %% Tel 358 0 4572076 %% Fax 358 0 4572302 %% %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

One note here, although "finger" is available on UNIX systems, the type of "fingering" of people on other computers that Rob mentioned is dependent upon having an Internet connection. People on BITNET with UNIX machines would not be able to use this to scan goings on on other machines. -- Sincerely, Dave Kristofferson GenBank Manager kristoff@genbank.bio.net
