harper@csc.fi (Rob Harper (Supercomputer Centre Finland)) (10/05/90)
I got some mail asking me about the CPQ NAMES on BITNET.
It would appear that Chris Condon's "BITNET for the Complete Idiot"
might be a timely posting to Bionaut since it is a classic document
on what you can do on Bitnet... and for you inquisitive souls with
access to UNIX then you can use the FINGER command to acheive
the same results as CPQ NAMES on BITNET. For example if I want to check
who is on GENBANK.BIO.NET I can finger them from Finland.
I would appear that Dave Kristofferson is such a busy man that
he has to have two sessions running at the same time:-)

One note here, although "finger" is available on UNIX systems, the type of "fingering" of people on other computers that Rob mentioned is dependent upon having an Internet connection. People on BITNET with UNIX machines would not be able to use this to scan goings on on other machines. -- Sincerely, Dave Kristofferson GenBank Manager kristoff@genbank.bio.net
