[bionet.users.addresses] "Interview"

harper@csc.fi (11/15/90)

I recently noted that Milan Jira had been writing messages to the BioSci
list and decided to do an "interview" so that other people on Bionauts
would be kept up to date with what is going on in Central Europe.

*** sent from Milan JIRA <ULIMJ@CSEARN.BITNET>

Brief answers to your four questions:

Q1: How did you hear about the BioSci network?

1. We established the cooperation with the Basel Institute of Immunology
in aim to help our Faculty in last period.
Some of them, having experience with e-mail shared it with us, including
   subscribtions to some listservers.
We appreciate very much this kind of help doing in the last month for
Czechoslovakia, in particular for 3rd Medical Faculty, Charles University,
Prague, Czechoslovakia. Bert Temminck was the most important person to
let me know and learn about IRLEARN listservers.
I am not to much familiar to hardware and g-box, all was facilitated with
kind help of west European countries. The new EC3090 will replaced the old
EC IBM on the central CS node. For details on node please contact nickname
   IL@CSEARN.

Q2. What advantages do you see in this type of communication?

2. There is not doubt, that this way of communication will facilitate the
research work, proposals, contacts, informations exchange and teaching at
   the Czechoslovak Universities.

Q3. What types of difficulties do you encounter when networking?

3. Netnames list of EARN-BITNET is not complete. I found it sometimes difficult
to find e-mail address of the friend, the University etc.
The access to U.S is more complicated if it does not work it BITNET mode.
There is also lack of information for utilities offered by netservers and
listservers wordwide. Any suggestion how to subscribe, enter databases etc.
will be highly appreciated. I will distribute it within CSEARN node users.

Q4. What is the present hardware situation in your country?

4. I feel (not beeing hardware expert) that there is a lack of MODEMs for
peripheral users, or the price is substantial high (especially for students)
I forward your message to IL who has substantial knowledge about hardware
in netnode CSEARN and is competent to answer this question.

Thanks for contacting me at this new political and socioeconomical situation
in East (Central) Europe this year. Milan. 3rd Medical Faculty, Charles
University, Srobarova 48, Praha 10, Czechoslovakia.

P.S. Sorry to announce to listsubscribers that I am unable to transfer and
deliver personal messages within Czechoslovakia, and even in Prague.
Urgent (life-important) messages might be delivered by local mail or
transferred by phone. Check CSEARN netnames there might be userid of the
friend you wish to contact him. Please kindly mention that my mailbook
due to workload is checked 2-3 times a week.
