[bit.listserv.policy-l] SIGUCCS ... lets be constructive.

TLIMONCE@DREW.BITNET (Tom Limoncelli @ Drew Univ.) (01/17/90)

The gripe/solutions ratio is pretty high. Does anyone have any
suggestions on how to prevent this?

1 -- "Tell sites to inform their users" We have over 3000 email
accounts here. About 1000 of them know what Bitnet is. I
continually tell people (I don't run the show here) but I would be
open to suggestions on how to do mass-education. Maybe we should
monitor net usage and have an automated warning message sent out?

2 -- I don't know if anyone has has suggested this. How about
telling people ALTERNATIVES? Usenet has a monthly posting about how
to use the network. It includes reminders about only posting to "the
right" newsgroup. (and there is a widely known place to announce
conferences)

Ah, the old "monthly posting arguement".

I know there is a lot of work on Usage Guides and User Guides. How
about something like a monthly posting system for listservs?

Idea: What if each list had a monthly posting. No, the traffic
caused by a monthly post would be HUGE. Maybe we could do certain
lists each day so as to even things out. Maybe.

Idea: What if there was ONE monthly post. Just a general message
about the "Top 10 abuses of Bitnet and why people shouldn't do them"
(and maybe a bit of news or something). This message could be sent
out to each member of each list, but no duplicates. That is, no
matter how many lists you are on you'd still only receive one copy.
I'm sure this could be added to the listserv software.

This could bring about another idea of mine. If that montly posting
bounces for a particular user two months in a row, they could be
removed from all listservs. (or something like that) ...but that's
another can of worms.

I would like to hear what other people think about this. I think
there is a lot of room for discussion here.

Tom Limoncelli The computer industry should spend more time in front of
tlimonce@drew.edu (new) their computers. Remember when 'Look & Feel'

Is there a list somewhere to post announcements of conferences and
solicitations for papers?
