[comp.lsi.cad] automatic circuit object identification?

Anyone seen or heard of any cad tools to do this?  Feed a printed schematic
to a scanner, generate some "standard" format like TIFF or EPS, and pick
out the resistors, BJTs, other circuit elements and nodes.

I've seen a few research papers with marginal results reported.  I know of
no products nor publically available tools that do this.

I'd appreciate any pointers to real products, successful research efforts,
research underway, and other sources of related information.
