[comp.protocols.iso.x400.gateway] Contentious Proposition

dcrocker@TWG.COM (Dave Crocker) (07/14/88)

It is tempting to think that 822/X400 gatewaying will be temporary. How
long does temporary have to be, before it becomes permanent?

How long do you think it will be before the entire world has thrown
away 822 and converted to X.400? You will need gatewaying until then.

When do you believe that X.400 will dominate? If your answer is
"quickly" you may want to consider previous experience with customer
adoption of new technology and the period of time that is taken before
replacement technology dominates, on the average. You may also want to
to consider the degree of difference, in complexity, overhead, etc., between
882-based mail and X.400-based mail.

Simple, fast, text-oriented mail systems die remarkably hard.
