It is tempting to think that 822/X400 gatewaying will be temporary. How long does temporary have to be, before it becomes permanent? How long do you think it will be before the entire world has thrown away 822 and converted to X.400? You will need gatewaying until then. When do you believe that X.400 will dominate? If your answer is "quickly" you may want to consider previous experience with customer adoption of new technology and the period of time that is taken before replacement technology dominates, on the average. You may also want to to consider the degree of difference, in complexity, overhead, etc., between 882-based mail and X.400-based mail. Simple, fast, text-oriented mail systems die remarkably hard.
