I would be happy to start Info-Silicon-Compilers if people want to see it happen. However, unless you think there will be lots of traffic, we could just use Info-VLSI, since there hasn't been much traffic here, and I imagine a large percentage of the subscribers would be interested in hearing what's going on. What do y'all think? Respond to me individually, please, unless your comments are of general interest. --Bruce Nemnich, Thinking Machines Corporation, Cambridge, MA bruce@think.com, seismo!think!bruce, bjn@mitvma.bitnet; +1 617 876 1111

In his recent posting to info-vlsi, Vance Truner of Silicon Compilers Systems Corp. recommended that a new newsgroup on silicon compilers be started named comp.lsi.silicon or comp.lsi.compilers. If the new newsgroup is started on USENET, as these names imply, then many of the potential users of this group would be excluded. There are many UNIX hosts that are not part of the USENET news system. In addition, all MILNET hosts that use other operating systems are also not members of USENET. I recommend that the new newsgroup be started on MILNET and that it be similar to info-vlsi. A good name would be info-silicon-compilers. I'm not exactly a company spokesman, but I'll be willing to contribute to this group and answer any questions about Seattle Silicon. Not all of the interesting work in silicon compilation is in "compiler companies"; there should be responses from universities and places like Hewlett-Packard, Symbolics, and MCC. I hope that the discussion will encompass all areas of VLSI CAD, including synthesis, optimization, simulation, generation, layout, verification, and fabrication. -- Stephen Sugiyama (uucp: ...uw-beaver!tikal!ole!sss) Seattle Silicon 3075 112th Ave NE Bellevue, WA 98004 (206) 828-4422

These topics would be of much interest to myself and others here at Zycad. We could of course contribute Zycad's viewpoint on these topics. This newsgroup has not been very active; let's get it going.
