Has anyone written an X11 driver for Magic? The Brown CS Dept. is currently using the Berkeley Design Tools and especially Magic for VLSI design work. Magic is running on an Encore Multimax and talks to various color workstations via X. We modified the horrible X10 graphics routines supplied on the distribution tape, so that we could use all our workstations: Apollo 300's (4-bit display), HP300, HP350, HP825 with 4-bit, 6-bit, 8-bit renaissance displays, and of course microvax workstations. Now, over Xmas our staff will install X11 on some machines for testing, so it looks like it is time to redo the graphics routines: Our options are: (a) Rewrite grX[1..5].c an annoying amout of work. (b) Find somebody else out there in netland who has done the work. Adding our fixes to use 4-bit displays, have fast gridlines and no surprises due to shifts in the color table would be preferable to writing the whole thing. Sincerely yours, Markus G.
