			Announcement & Call For Papers

		     DECENNIAL CALTECH CONFERENCE ON VLSI

		      California Institute of Technology
			     Pasadena, California
			       20-22 March 1989
______________________________________________________________________________

This is the tenth anniversary and the eleventh in a series of conferences on
advanced research in VLSI held at Caltech in 1979, 1981, and 1983; at MIT in
1980, 1982, 1984, 1986, and 1988; at University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill in 1985; and at Stanford University in 1987.

This series of conferences has served as a forum for industry, university, and
government researchers to report and discuss leading-edge research in
innovative VLSI designs, computer-aided VLSI design and analysis tools, VLSI
design theory, and VLSI architectures.

			  --------------------------
			  DAY 1 --- INVITED SPEAKERS
			  --------------------------

The first day of this decennial conference will be devoted to presentations by
a distinguished group of invited speakers, whose accomplishments and
involvement with VLSI research provide a diversity of viewpoints on the
remarkable advances of the past decade, and on the challenges of the next
decade.

			   Carver A. Mead, Caltech
		      "Analog VLSI and Neural Systems"
				     ___

Lynn A. Conway, University of Michigan
		       "Have We Won the Revolution?"
				     ___

			  Charles E. Leiserson, MIT
			       "VLSI Theory"
				     ___

The conference banquet, to be held on Monday evening, 20 March, will feature
Dr. Gordon E. Moore, chairman of Intel Corporation, who will talk about the
technological events and innovations that have shaped the world of
microelectronics.

		      ---------------------------------
		      DAYS 2 & 3 --- CONTRIBUTED PAPERS
		      ---------------------------------

Contributed papers will be presented during the 21--22 March sessions to be
organized by the program committee.

			   INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS
			   -----------------------

The Proceedings will be published by MIT press, and will be distributed at the
conference to all attendees.

Send one copy of an extended abstract or draft paper up to 16 pages (see the
Proceedings of the 1986, 1987, or 1988 Conferences, published by MIT Press,
for suitable formats) by 15 November 1988 to Professor Charles L. Seitz,
Computer Science 256-80, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena CA
91125.  Authors will be notified of acceptance by 15 December 1988;
camera-ready copy is due at MIT Press by 16 January 1989.

The program committee expects to select 15 to 18 papers based on technical
merit, topical interest, and innovative content. Papers or abstracts should
indicate clearly the original contributions of the paper, and how it relates
to previous work. If the paper reports on a VLSI circuit, system, or design
tool, the paper should state clearly the operational status of the project.
