                        What is "EDIF" anyway?

The term "EDIF" stands for the Electronic Design Interchange
Format. EDIF is a public domain and neutral format intended
for transfer of electronic design data between dissimilar
CAD/CAE computer systems. It does not address the actual
transfer of the file, rather the interpretation of the
information contained in the file. While the information
contained in an EDIF file will probably be derived from a
database of some type and will likely be entered into a
database on receipt by the user, EDIF is not itself intended
to be used as a database, but as a means of facilitating
     communication between databases.
The format includes both IC and PCB designs and up until now
has emphasized semicustom IC interfaces to workstations.
Semicustom IC or ASIC vendors are especially interested since
EDIF provides a means to supply workstation libraries to
customers and for our customers to return designs to us for
     manufacture.
EDIF is derived from earlier specialized standards such as
CIF, TIDAL, CIDF, GAIL, and GDS-II or "stream" format, and
attempts to allow the transfer of the complete spectrum of
electrical information about a design. This includes
schematics, simulation models, physical design rules,
symbolic layout, test vectors, PCB layout, and IC mask
     layout.
EDIF has been under development since Nov. 1983, and is now
entering full production use at many companies and
universities worldwide. The mailing list has addresses from
over 29 countries worldwide. EDIF has been adopted as
EIA/ANSI standard 548, and IEC/ISO standardization is in
     progress.
