[comp.lsi] Skill

botticel@olympus.crd.ge.com (David J. Botticello) (11/20/89)

Hi all,

If you have no interest in Cadence Design Systems products then hit
"n" now, else, please read on.

I posted a message last week to comp.lsi.cad, but it seems it landed in the
proverbial bit bucket. Let me try to rebuild it here.

At last week's Cadence Users Group Meeting in San Jose, California, it was
decided that with the wealth of Skill code both in and out of Cadence, it
was time we organized a method for sharing it. I have taken on the task of
collecting and distributing both Skill code and other software that users
or Cadence AEs have written to aid users of Edge or Dracula products. Once
all the procedures are in place, I will provide two mailing lists. The first
will be a quarterly (or monthly if supply is larger enough) update list of
new code I have received. This code will then be availible by E-Mail (hopefully
automated in the near future). The second list will be those who wish any and
all code sent to them as it is received.

As for the initial distribution, I am currently discussing this with Cadence
management. As soon as we reach an agreement I will announce what the plans
are. I am also looking at an annual distribution method to keep those not on
either list up to date, as well as new users.

As for the code itself, I will not be maintaining it. I will only be handling
sorting, cataloging, and providing a brief synopsis of each. I will also
provide a tracking service for patches. If someone augments code or fixes
bugs, I will either install the patches or provide the original and patches
in a single package for the end user to apply as they see fit.

The majority of the attendees fell this will prove to be a valuable resource
for the Cadence community. It will only be as valuable as the amount of
input from the users. Keep in mind, if no ones sends code in, then I can't
send any out. We aren't looking for just the fancy stuff. What seems
simplistic to you may be just the improvement the next user is looking for.
I still remember how involved prior IC Cad users groups had (and may still
be, I have since migrated away to Cadence) been. There was a wealth of
utilities, enhancements, and even fun stuff. I think we have the installed
base to have a wonderful source of programs in all areas of the Cadence
world.

Please submit all code (or suggestions/comments on any of the above) to
botticel@orion.crd.ge.com or botticello@crd.ge.com or uunet!crdgw1!botticello

I will be setting up two mailboxes explicitly for these purposes, as well
as a code request mailbox in the near future. I will notify all when they
are sent. Until then if you have trouble getting through repeatedly then
please give me a call, or use land mail, and I will straighten out the
trouble if I can.
