Two people replied to my request for review papers, reports or books on high level synthesis. This is what I got (not much)! Note: The comments on last two ref. were mailed to me along with the ref. and do not represent my openion. R. K. Brayton, G. D. Hachtel, and A. L. Sangiovanni-Vincentelli, "Multilevel Logic Synthesis," Proc. IEEE, vol. 78, no. 2, Feb. 1990. [98 refs.] M. C. McFarland, A. C. Parker, and R. Camposano, "The High-Level Synthesis of Digital Systems," ibid. [92 refs.] J. Allen, "Performance-Directed Synthesis of VLSI Systems," ibid. [115 refs.] M.C. McFarland et al, "Tutorial on High-Level Synthesis," Proc 25th DAC, pages 330-336. This is an overview, slanted, of course, toward their work. D.E. Thomas et al, "Algorithmic and Register-Transfer Level Synthesis: The System Architect's Workbench," Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1990, ISBN 0-7923-9053-9. This book describes the work at CMU; it is very useful if you are interested in details. For each synthesis issue, the work in the area is referenced, and then there is a detailed description of the way in which the SAW system deals with the issue. Examples and results are included. baiju
