In the August 1984 issue of IEEE Computer, a product called the Synapse N+1 is discussed in the article "Fault-Tolerant Systems in Commercial Applications". In particular, there is mention of a scheme used to decide where to insert checkpoints in higher-level language code. I called the number in the article, and it was not valid. I dialed the operator, and there is no listing for Synapse in Milpitas, CA. Netters, here are my questions: 1.)Is this company in business? If so, where can I reach them? 2.)Are there published articles describing this machine? If so, where? Thanks, and please mail responses, Jonathan M. Smith jms@garfield.columbia.edu

Synapse is out of business. You might send mail to ucat!pesnta!peoam!wjb or ucat!pesnta!peoam!en and ask these two guys about Synapse (they use to work there). The only problem is that you may not get a reply for a few weeks since they are always "on-the-road".
