Yeeps!  Quick, let's all agree on the next standard word size, before
everybody solves this one a different way.  I vote for 64 bits, based
on the "power of two" benefits, and several existing commercial
precedents.  Who would have believed we'd run off the end of 32 bits
this soon, back in say 1967?  Any takers on 128 bits to save having to
do all this again in twenty years?  (Take my word, the last twenty
passed in a heartbeat, and I still hope to be raising hackles among
computerists in 2007.)
