[comp.arch] Parallel Processing

tan@oakhill.UUCP (11/21/87)

Hello every body:

I am trying to understand the communication needs between
processors/computers in a multi-processors/micro-computers
(ucomputer) system. I would appreciate any help that you can
give me.

Some of the standard features are:
.They should be real world systems, i.e., systems with practical
applications (those that can be manufactured and marketed).
.They are multi-processor or multi-ucomputer systems.
.Each processor/ucomputer should have the power of at least a
 16-bit processor/ucomputer (68000's family ucomputer is prefered).

The kind of information I am looking for are:
.What are the applications?
 (Ex.: Speech/Image processing)
.What are the interconnection techniques?
(Ex.: SIMD, MIMD, Star, Ring, Mesh, others)
.What are some of the busing scheme being used?
(Ex.: VME bus, Nu bus, others)
.What hardware hooks are required for efficient parallel
processing? (I/O bandwidth, bus sizes, speed, the number of serial
and parallel ports, DMA capability, etc.)
.Are there any critcal elements that I have left out?
.Are there any "watch-outs" that I should be aware of?

Any help and all help are greatly appriciated. Please E-mail your
responses to me. If there are others interested in the same
information, I would be happy to pass them along or combine them
into one posting.

Bye, for now.

To the World,

I have mailed a response in the notes file comp.ai. Its titled Parallel
processing. I would appreciate it if you would read this and hopefully reply
to it.

Cheers
