  True, the internal DEC acronym is VUP.  It stands for (V)AX 11/780 
(U)nit of (P)rocessing.  As are all single numbers used to compare 
different processors, a VUP is fuzzy.  For example, a microVAX II is
roughly equivalent in integer speed to an 11/780 but I/O throughput
is less.  Nevertheless, a VUP is useful because many comparisons had
used an 11/780 as the informal measuring stick.
