The April Issue of IEEE Micro is dedicated to Japanese 32 bit microprocessors. There is one review of a new Toshiba 25MHz 32 bit chip that should not be in print however, as it is very poorly written with hardly any useful information. The article spends several pages benchmarking this brand new chip verses a Motorola 68000 at 10 MHz, using a 1981 article for the 68000 results. The bottom line of the article is that their brand new microprocessor is actually six times better! Imagine that: a 32 bit 25 MHz chip just now being manufactured is actually six times faster than a nine year old 68000 at 10 MHz !!!!!! This new Japanese processor truly stretches the state of the art. Yeah, right... If anyone knows anyone at IEEE that is remotely responsible for such stupid comparisons, please have them shot for me. A normally interesting journal seems to have lost something. (Also interesting are the many sections of articles written by Japanese that have TERRIBLE English grammar.) SUMMARY: the whole issue is a waste of time. Skip it until the next issue which is on RISC stuff. P.S. - They also managed to screw up the announcement of Apple's new Laser printers. They say that the whole family are 68020 based, with prices starting at 2795. The price is right, but for that you only get a 68000. The 68020 model is over $5K. Remember: this magazine is the authority on processors, however. Jeezz... #include <stddisclaimer.h> Dan Allen Apple Computer FLAME OFF
