In regard to compilng and running Dhrystone 2, I had said: > ...I found an extreme case where, on the actual > benchmark, machine A was about 80% of the Dhrystones of machine B; however, > the time (user CPU) to do the "make" on machine B was 5 TIMES what it was > on machine A! This is pretty extreme. I guess I wasn't paying attention when I wrote this...the difference was a factor of *10*, not 5! Yes, the apparently-slightly-faster machine on the benchmark was an order of magnitude slower doing the compilation and link. Someone wrote asking whether I had optimization turned on. I did--and this makes my numbers questionable as indicators of how fast a machine runs for development. However, I re-ran the make with optimization disabled--both machines were significantly faster (using only about 2/3 the user cpu for the make) - BUT the difference stayed the same, about a factor of ten! (And yes, the machines are comparable. They're in the same general price bracket and market; they're mid-to-high-end workstations.) -- Dick Dunn UUCP: {ncar, cbosgd, nbires}!ico!rcd (303)449-2870 ...If you get confused just listen to the music play...
