[comp.arch] users speak out

anneser@pwa-b.UUCP (Dean Anneser) (07/26/88)

We are currently evaluating a number of different systems to replace our
aging PDP-11/55's. The job this machine will be required for, is to run
a real-time simulation/data_acquisition/control application. I would very
much appreciate some general comments from the users of Alliant, Gould,
Sequent, and Encore machines.

1) Did the machine perform as advertised ??
2) Is its h/w architecture well suited for your application ??
3) What is its mean time between failures, and time to repair ??
4) How bug free/user friendly (re: non-unix systems) is the operating
    system ??
5) Compilers/debuggers -- ease of use .. sophistication .. mix routines
written in different languages for one task (including ADA) ??
6) Competency of s/w|h/w support from vendor ?? (do they know what they're
talking about .. quick turnaround on problems)
7) If your application is real-time -- can you get enough of the o/s out of
the way without a great deal of pain ??
8) Overall rating of vendor ?? (did he vanish after concluding the sale ..
are you pleased with your choice)
9) Costs

Thank you very much !
