Jobs never cared which CPU was used in the Apple II. The 6502 was chosen
because, when Intel 8080s were selling for $360, Woz was able to pick a 6502
up at Wescon for $20.

If this was the same Wescon where I got my 6501 (6800 pin-compatible),
The Woz either paid $25 for a 6502 or I was ripped off! :-) The prices
in the hospitality suite at the St Francis were 6501: $20, 6502: $25.
I wanted to eat that night so I have an interesting artifact in my desk
drawer.

OK, I mixed them up. The difference between the 6501 and the 6502 (as I recall)
was that the 6501 need a two phase clock, while the 6502 only needed a single
phase clock, and generated the other phase internally.

Woz says that he bought two of each, and a couple of the $5 manuals. HP was
obviously paying him enough :-)
