[comp.arch] PAWS/GPSM

Does anyone have any comments on the PAWS/GPSM package from IRA?
Did it do the job? Was it straight-forward in use? Support?
Features? Any help from people who have used this package
would be appreciated.

8 years ago I used CADS (analytic modeling) and 2 years ago I worked with
people who were using PAWS. They work very well within the limits that
IRA plainly explains. They're easy enough to use that the focus is on
understanding your system rather than on the mechanics of building the
model. You get lots of support at first, then a friendly knowledgeable
grad student answering the telephone. We never had any problems that would
have required more help, but if we had, I think we would have needed to
buy some consultation.

You need to put some real CPU power behind PAWS. I think 1 VAX-MIPS per
user is the bare minimum, for simulation times from half an hour to several
hours.

Output is usually voluminous, and you have to sort through it for a few
measures of interest. Last I heard they were working on still more
options to control output. I wish they'd give up and dump everything
into a multi-dimensional spreadsheet which you could browse as you
wished.

DISCLAIMER: Dr. Browne (IRA) was my thesis advisor.
