[comp.arch] GaAs Hardware

kolstad@prisma (01/05/89)

Prisma, Inc. in Colorado Springs, Colorado is a 45 person startup building
a SPARC-based computer system using GaAs technology. Sporting large, fast
physical memory, speedy I/O, and UNIX tailored to large systems, the
processor should be announced within the next 18 months. Published
accounts claim it will exceed 150 VAXMIPS in its performance.

The CPU will use custom chips of MSI GaAs fabricated in the USA. The
processor itself fits into a one foot cube (owing to wire length
problems). Prisma appears to have solved the cooling, interconnect,
and noise problems inherent in high speed digital GaAs circuitry.

Cheers.
