[comp.arch] Hardware cache in a PC

allan@dhw68k.cts.com (Alan Perry) (01/24/89)

I own a PW2 Series 850 (a.k.a Mitsubishi MP-386, a 386-based PC-AT
compatible). Straight out of the box, it comes with a 32KB "direct-mapped
cache". With the addition of 9 SRAMS and switching some jumpers, the cache
becomes a 64KB "two-way set associative cache".

What is the difference between the two caches and what kind of performance
increases might I expect from the 64KB cache?
