[comp.arch] thanks for information on microprocessor caches

levy@ttrdc.UUCP (Daniel R. Levy) (03/16/89)

Thank-you to everyone who sent me information on microprocessors with
integrated caches.

In addition to the chips I had listed (NS32532, MC68020, i860, CLIPPER
[not truly an integrated cache], CRISP, MIPS-X, the Matsushita processor,
Microvax, and AM29000) several people suggested these, not all of which
I have verified:

Intel 80980
Motorola MC68030
Intel 88200 (cache/mmu for 88100)
Motorola 88000 (a 3-chip set like CLIPPER)
Motorola 68040 (to be released)
Intel 80486 (to be released)
Motorola MC88100/MC88200 (like CLIPPER but extensible) (are Motorola and Intel
going in on this one together???)
Toshiba TX3
INMOS transputers (with local memory)
Acorn Computers Ltd (VLSI Technology) VL86C020
Texas Instruments (?) TMS34010
Symbolic Ivory
Berkeley SPUR

Anyhow, the paper I was writing is written and submitted now. I ended up doing
only 7 chips because I decided to stick to processors with truly integrated
caches (leaving out multi-chip processors like the CLIPPER and the 88000) and
the information I could dig up on some others was too skimpy or the message I
received was too late for me to use it.

Thanks again to everyone who helped.
