While my physics isn't really all that brillant I have heard of several problems with using fibre optics in the way described. The first problem is that with current level of technology multiple frequency fibre optics (and to a lessor degree single frequency) are very sensitive to vibrations, eg some one walking by your office. Because of these vibrations the frequency gets thrown of wack a fair bit and it becomes difficult to determine which frequency it original came from. The second problem is being able to build a lasers capable of being pulsed fast enoungh to get the rates mentioned (recievers have the same problem). Otherwise the use of fibre optics for interconnection make a lot of sense.
