When we were defining the SPARC reference MMU, the usual debate about the page size came up. In particular, we were worried about user visibility (read ABI visibility) of the page size since protection is generally implemented on a per-page basis. We got around this problem by deciding that protection would change only on 64K boundaries. As long as the page size is a power of two less than or equal to 64K, the page size is invisible to the user. We did not consider performance differences due to page size to be "user visible." On another subject, I couldn't help laughing about the number of resumes floating around of people claiming to have designed the 386. I have seen about an equal number of people who claimed to have designed the 11/780. Over the years, I have interviewed hundreds of people for engineering positions, and I collect "resume gems." Here are a few of them. This probably belongs in rec.humor, but all my friends are in this group! Dave Emberson (dre@sun.com) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Resume Gems: Direct quotes from resumes submitted in response to newspaper ads for engineering positions. "Due to lack of work and I was pregnant, my employment ended on December 1985." "I look forward to a personal interview at your earliest convenience to discuss my qualifications in person." "I am about your best bet for a person as you could ask for." "The work your company produces is well suited to my experience." "You will discover through the enclosed resume that I am not only a self- motivated engineer but also a competent executive with honors." "I really don't care about how much the salary will be because there are so many things to learn that is much important than money." "While the enclosed resume outlines my qualifications, it can't demonstrate my interpersonal skill." "Three years of advanced education makes me stronger than I was four years ago." "My communication skills was very well developed." "I have intensive programming experience because I am the only one software engineer in my present company." "I have been a police officer for 15 years. ... My degree in public management, with an emphasis in accounting has further enhanced my abilities to become an immediate productive member of your team." "I have been working at ______ during the summer session of 1986. It provides me the opportunity to be responsible to my boss and how to cooperate with my fellows, in order to meet the customers' requirements and finish the jobs as good as possible." "Parlayed $27,000 of my savings into $3,000 in ... a family owned business in north-eastern Florida."

Dave Emberson's resume tidbits are pretty amusing. In my last job, I screened resumes for my boss. About half enclosed a newspaper clipping (the employment ad we ran). That was usually a good indication of brain damage. The nuttiest response we ever got included a xerox copy of the guy's PhD diploma. I suggested to my boss that we include an 8X10 glossy of himself with the rejection letter :-)
