[comp.arch] MMUs, Page Size, Resume Humor

dre@ember.Sun.COM (David R. Emberson) (05/27/89)

When we were defining the SPARC reference MMU, the usual debate about the page
size came up. In particular, we were worried about user visibility (read ABI
visibility) of the page size since protection is generally implemented on a
per-page basis. We got around this problem by deciding that protection would
change only on 64K boundaries. As long as the page size is a power of two
less than or equal to 64K, the page size is invisible to the user. We did not
consider performance differences due to page size to be "user visible."

On another subject, I couldn't help laughing about the number of resumes
floating around of people claiming to have designed the 386. I have seen about
an equal number of people who claimed to have designed the 11/780. Over the
years, I have interviewed hundreds of people for engineering positions, and
I collect "resume gems." Here are a few of them. This probably belongs in
rec.humor, but all my friends are in this group!

Dave Emberson's resume tidbits are pretty amusing. In my last job, I
screened resumes for my boss. About half enclosed a newspaper clipping
(the employment ad we ran). That was usually a good indication of brain
damage.

The nuttiest response we ever got included a xerox copy of the guy's PhD
diploma. I suggested to my boss that we include an 8X10 glossy of himself
with the rejection letter :-)
