[comp.arch] Hardware Trophy Hunting

pattis@june.cs.washington.edu (Richard Pattis) (07/18/89)

Recently the physics department at UW retired their DEC-10; I was able to
convince them to give me the front panel (all the lights and switches). I'm
interested in expanding my collection of panels, plus acquiring any other
interesting computer antiques (things like core planes, etc). Is there any
systematic way to approach this treasure hunt? Are there any companies out
there that collect and resell such hardware? I know the Computer Museum in
Boston sells some things, but that's the only supplier (or anyone close) that
I've found. I'd appreciate any hints from the net.

There are a variety of junk companies around here in the Valley
[Santa Clara, Halted: [Hal Ted] is one, and there are many others].
A few companies are rather sensitive that some of their equipment gets
picked up in such a way. I think the greatest score I've heard was
a Xerox Alto for $100. Needed some work, but it appeared at the last Hacker's
Conference. Just ask around.

Another gross generalization from

"Recently the physics department at UW retired their DEC-10 ..."

How did they retire it?
When the KA-10 at Claremont Colleges was retired, $90,000 worth of
scrap gold was salvaged from it.

Speaking of CPU retirement -- I heard that, just after I left Carleton College
in '78, Igor, our multi-user PDP/8-I, was to be retired. It was sold
to a mental institution in Nebraska.
