[comp.arch] The ATTACK OF THE KILLER MICROS

eugene@eos.UUCP (Eugene Miya) (11/29/89)

I try to leave, and I get these mail notes: "Hey come back there's an
interesting discussion on..."

Paul Rodman makes some good points. I was in the audience video taping
Eugene (does news echo?) at SC'89. Many of us could have easily shot
him down (memory as a good example), but I think he serves as a good
battering ram to the concept of centralized computer centers.
Oh I may happen to work for one, but we are quite decentralized, we
emphasize workstations.

I think Eugene's words should be used as a banner to strike fear into
the hearts of old dinosaurs everywhere. That is how you go about
getting solutions. Doug Pase and I were reviewing the footage I shot
and Brooks is great, he brought some fun and thinking into what could
have been a somewhat stuffy conference. Some supercomputer people
tend to be that way (too much money).

These managers do not see that our electronics all comes from the
same basic technology, so it might as well be as small as possible 8)
[Yes I know], no the technical point is that we need the next level
of integration. The solution does not come by continuing to stuff
ever more into the same boxes, the economies do not scale linearly
(but their management thinking does). Anyways, it was fun reviewing
the tape. He should have given the Usenet (you guys who posted like Hugh)
some credit. 8)

Another gross generalization from

"You trust the `reply' command with all those different mailers out there?"
"If my mail does not reach you, please accept my apology."

Actually, Eugene, the talk titled "Attack of the Killer Micros" complete
with the the horrific postscript image, had been presented at LLNL
in a handful of times before the term was introduced to the USENET. The
USENET discussions certainly did contribute to the state of tune of the
presentation, however. I am going to have to post the clever postscript
artwork of Ken Skennel of LLNL some day.
