I have a question as to the merits of going in for a Sun 3 as opposed to a SparcStaion for a site. The configuraton consists of 3 Suns and 4 PC-ATs with the Suns serving as file servers for the AT as well as development units. 1. Other than compatibility with 680x0, is there any reason to go in for Sun3s rather than SparcStations ? 2. Do gcc, gdb and g++ run reliably on the SparcStation ? 3. I heard from someone(read rumor) that Sun 3 performance is better than SparcStation performance when more than 4/5 processes(applications) are involved. I know this is very nebulous, but any feedback from real users would help. 4. SparcStations are supposed to boot from the internal SCSI drive. Is it possible to order a SS without this drive and use a different vendor's drive to boot from ? Has it been done ? If I get enough replies I will summarise.
