[comp.arch] 68040 overview?

melling@cs.psu.edu (Michael D Mellinger) (03/01/90)

Does anyone know where I can get an overview of the 68040? I would
like an article that goes into some detail on how branching and
caching are handled. Also, are there any good periodicals that
discuss microprocessors in general. It would nice to see the latest
microprocessors compared(something I wanted to do in my architecture
class but...).

Try looking at the last and past issues of IEEE Micro for good micro
overview articles. I believe the last issue had a couple of in depth
68040 articles.

Try the latest issue of IEEE Micro (Feb 90). This is their "Hot Chips"
issue that has articles on some selected architectures.

The 68040 article included is the first of two parts. The first part
looks at the integer unit (including branch handling) and floating-point
unit. The second part (due out in June) looks at the cache design,
memory management, and the bus.
