Last year, IBM Fellow Don Haderly (of DB2 fame) gave a talk here and claimed that in the 90's, IBM's biggest competitors in database software would be Tandem and Hitachi. He said that Japan hadn't really pushed their business software yet, but it was only a matter of time... With most of the world's largest banks and many of the world's largest companies, there is plenty of both money and demand for internal software development in Japan. And once they get good at it, you can bet they'll start exporting it. Gene
