[comp.arch] A short note on posting

eugene@amelia.nas.nasa.gov (Eugene Miya) (02/08/90)

A simple request: (you do read simple requests don't you?)

1) If you are posting a follow up, make an effort to Edit the SUBJECT: line.
Does the subject correspond to your comments or are you taking a new
tangent?
This isn't a request (no please); it's good sense. Just telling to avoid
making you look silly. Separate the wheat from the chaff. Which are you?

2) Have you thought about mail rather than a follow up? A good
conversation is better than wading thru endless follow-ups.

3) Can you limit the distribution? (ba,ca,usa,na) Date postings?

4) Having you thought about more conventional media: library, telephone
note those stupid phone or talk commands), writting a letter?

really want to see the other guy's signature again do you?).

[ Several simplistic condescending rules deleted ]

I am offended by this periodic posting. This has nothing to do with
comp.arch, and I am insulted by the implication that, were it not for
Eugene Miya, there would be no order on the net. The vast majority of
readers are more than capable of conducting themselves in an orderly
fashion. I would suggest that the occasional aberrant poster be dealt with
on an individual basis.

I don't recall having an election for the network etiquette monitor.
We can do without these postings.

Too bad. The increasing noise level on the net makes such requests as
Eugene's appropriate, justified, and appreciated. While Eugene tries a
solution that has worked well in other groups, you, Chuck, are simply
part of the problem. If you don't like Eugene's phrasing, suggest
something else and mail it him. If you don't like his solution, come
up with something you do like and show the same initiative Eugene has.

Perhaps the issue should be called to a vote. Similiar postings are now
being used in a number of other groups with some success. For a number
of months I made a regular posting to misc.jobs which seemed to keep the
flame fests to a very low number. Perhaps a monthly reminder that
RISC v. CISC [ and now new WISC! ] wars are purely religious would keep
signal to noise ratio just a tad better.

6) comp.arch specific: What is architecture? It's not well defined
in the context of this group. Some restrict it to hardware, others
talk about software architecture (like Unix). One thing is for certain
you will see both types of discussions in this group.
