[comp.arch] SCSI

abali@parts.eng.ohio-state.edu (Bulent Abali) (05/03/89)

Did anybody ever use the SCSI interface chips on the market?
I believe there are several companies such as NCR, Western Digital,
and Adaptec offering SCSI chips. I would like to use one of them,
but I heard rumors that some have unreported errors and bugs in them.
If you like to share your experiences, would you please post it here
or e-mail directly? Thanks.

Hi,

I would like to know what SCSI is all about. Why it
is so popular today? What makes it unique when compared
to other bus standards like VME eventhough it achieves
a throughput of only 5MB/sec? Advantages and Disadvantages
when compared to other bus stands..and so on..

Any references would also be helpful..

Someone asked on the net what makes the SCSI bus so popular, given the
modest 5MB/s thruput. I propose that it is the only bus to which you can
connect using a cable and a flip of a switch, accessible without disassembling
the 'device'. It therefore has tremendous marketing advantage, and it will
be around at least as long as the IBM PC architecture.

One might ask what makes the PC-AT bus so popular, given the modest 4MB/s
thruput. My guess is that, until recently, there hasn't been all that much
need for things on the desktop that go faster. Even now, most actual hard
drive hardware can barely manage 1.5MB/s or so.
