[comp.arch] CD-ROM software distribution...

mo@messy.bellcore.com (Michael O'Dell) (12/04/90)

The low duplication cost of CD-ROMs is precisely why SUN is moving
their software distribution to CD-ROM. The 1/4" tapes cost a
bloody fortune, by comparison (orders of magnitude more when you
include duplication, handling, and shipping costs). I suspect that
a machine with a non-optional CD-ROM drive isn't that far off....

Commodore has already announced it: it amounts to a Commodore Amiga 500 in
a component stereo-shaped box with a CD-ROM drive. It was highlighted in
a recent AmigaWorld.

What goes into their drive? I thought this was supposed to be an interactive
technology which was/is better than a CD-ROM with a bunch of data on it?
(showing more-than-usual-ignorance...) Will it go both ways? (ie: High
Sierra and the "CDTV" format)
