**************************************************************************** NOTE: This is the most current version of the program as of April 2. It includes a better description of the Theme II tutorials by P. Bitar, the session chairs, and a better indication of when the social events take place. Hope to see you all in Toronto in May! **************************************************************************** 18th INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON COMPUTER ARCHITECTURE MAY 27-30, 1991 TORONTO, CANADA Sponsored by: Association for Computing Machinery/SIGARCH IEEE Computer Society ADVANCE PROGRAM MONDAY - MAY 27, 1991 TUTORIALS: Theme I: "Exploiting Concurrency": This theme discusses techniques and issues involved in exploiting concurrency. The morning tutorial concentrates on hardware issues and the afternoon concentrates on compilation issues. Morning Tutorial #1: "Approaches to Concurrency (VLIW, HPS, Pipelining and RISC)" Speaker: Y.L. PATT Architectural choices available with respect to various approaches to exploiting concurrency. Compile time vs run-time alternatives, instruction sets, issuing alternatives. Afternoon Tutorial #2: "Compilation Support for Superscalar Processors" Speaker: W. HWU Code Optimization Techniques and Scope, Code Scheduling methods, Critical Architectural Issues, and a discussion of Support of Numeric Applications vs. Non-numerical Applications. Theme II: "MIMD Synchronization and Coherency" This theme is intended for anyone who has gotten pieces of the synchronization/coherence puzzle here and there, and would now like to see how to put the puzzle together. Formulates the domain of synchronization and coherence concepts in an integrated and general manner, and includes current hot topics. Applies to shared-memory and message-passing architectures, multiprocessor or distributed. Morning Tutorial #3: ``Synchronization and Access Order'' Speaker: P. Bitar Identifies fundamental synchronization options, and covers methods for handling out-of-order memory access. Afternoon Tutorial #4: ``Combining Trees and Coherence'' Speaker: P. Bitar Analyzes the motivation, structure, and management of combining trees, and discusses fundamental coherence options, relating them to synchronization methods. Theme III: "RISC Systems: Architecture and Implementation" This theme presents the basic principles of RISC systems architecture and their design issues. CMOS and GaAs examples are discussed. The theme is intended for practicing engineers, computer scientists and graduate students. Morning Tutorial #5: Speaker: V.M. MILUTINOVIC RISC Principles, advantages and disadvantages, VLSI and compiler issues, examples (including RISC I,II, and Stanford MIPS). Afternoon Tutorial #6: Speaker: D. TABAK Architecture, Structure, Performance Comparisons, applications in workstations, multiprocessors and real-time systems, examples (including 80860, IBM RISC System/6000, 88000, SPARC and MIPS).
