                       CALL FOR PAPERS AND REFEREES

                                 HICSS - 25

                    Kauai, Hawaii January 7-10, 1992

                Architecture Track, Performance Engineering Mini-Track

     Performance Engineering: Are we there?

The Architecture Track of the 25th Hawaii International Conference on
Systems Sciences (HICSS-25) promises to be an exciting international forum
for advances in many areas of computer architecture. A mini-track, dealing
explicitly with issues related to the "Performance Engineering" is being
organized.

The issue of performance evaluation is extremely critical in
distributed and parallel systems. Modern parallel systems are designed
to achieve two main goals: high performance and increased
availability. Both goals can be achieved via replication of system
resources, but one should be aware that the use of parallelism
increases system complexity. While abstractions simplify design-time
complexity, they can be a major source of run-time performance
bottlenecks. These bottlenecks usually appear in one of four forms:
delays due to contention on common resources, decomposition and
synchronization overheads, as well as an unbalanced load on the
resources in the system.

Papers are expected to cover various fields of performance engineering
including:
	- New theoretical performance models.

	- Performance of parallel/distributed systems.

	- Performance of novel applications in high performance computing.

	- Automated tools for performance efficient design.

	- Performance monitoring and diagnostics.

	- Applications of queuing networks and their solutions.

	- Applications of Petri nets.

	- Performance of Real-Time systems.

	- Approximate solutions.

	- Deterministic models.

The Performance Engineering mini-track will include three paper sessions and
opportunity for discussion of relevant issues. Authors are invited to
submit papers describing promising original research, research in progress,
and the results of theoretical or experimental projects dealing with any of
the topics listed above.

Referees are also needed to participate through the review of submissions
to help ensure the quality of the submissions.

HICSS-25 is an annual conference sponsored by the University of Hawaii in
cooperation with ACM, IEEE Computer Society, and the Pacific Research
Institute for Information Systems and Management (PRIISM). A conference
proceedings, containing all accepted papers will be published.
