Over the past few months, mostly out of necessity, but somewhat out of mission, I have developed a series of PostScript definitions that form a very nice language for specifying publication quality plasmid and phage restriction maps. I'm not going to post the header it at this time, because it isn't finished, the form is horrendous, and it is approaching 1000 lines long. However, its functionality is superb. What I am going to post in several articles following is several examples and an abbreviated language manual. Those who want more information can write me, and I will send hard copy examples (SASE appreciated but not required.) The more daring can attempt to write their own figure using the information and example provided. On receipt of the information, I will run it through the processor (which by the way consists of the command "cat header $1 footer | lp -dps" on our machine) and send you back the hard output. Additional comments will prove useful to me, but should be unnecessary if the program form is correct. If it is not (and after all, it will be a new language, so errors are not unexpected), the comments will help me repair the program code in a way that is consistent with the biology of the situation. Comments about additional features would also be appreciated. Many features currently in the description language (the comprehensive selection of transcription arrows, for example) were placed there because someone needed them. :wq -- --------- Craig Werner (Lognames: werner, craigw) "This is no social crisis, just another tricky day for you."
