[sci.bio] Vertebrate growth & evolution | Biotech weapons

davidp@dbrmelb.dbrhi.oz (David Paterson) (11/20/89)

Imagine the vertebrates divided into three groups:
 1) Those that stop growing when they reach maturity
 2) Those that keep growing when they reach maturity
 3) Those with peculiar growth patterns (eg. frogs, salmon)

Would it be true to say that most birds and mammals fall in
group 1 and that most fishes and reptiles fall in group 2 ?

Can anyone find examples that support or conflict with the
above hypothesis?

If true, would this hypothesis support the contention that
birds (and therefore dinosaurs) are more closely related to
the mammals than to the reptiles?

Please do not post details of potential biotech weapons to
this newsgroup. It is an international newsgroup with a wide
variety of readers and I for one do not wish to be killed by
a biotech weapon.
