[sci.bio] big tree spiders

rmyers@network.ucsd.edu (Robert Myers) (09/14/90)

I've been impressed with the net knowledge of spiders and would
like to inquire about my local nemesis.

In rural north San Diego County we have a relatively large variety
of spider that lives in trees and spins a thick web sometimes greater
than 15 feet in diameter, usually in paths that I walk.
The spider is mostly fuzzy brown with zebra-like black stripes on
its bottom side and legs. The abdomen can be greater than 1.5
inches in diameter. I don't know it to be aggressive or otherwise
dangerous but its size and prevalence is of some concern, especially
at 5am when it is sometimes necessary to be out among them.
