I've been impressed with the net knowledge of spiders and would like to inquire about my local nemesis. In rural north San Diego County we have a relatively large variety of spider that lives in trees and spins a thick web sometimes greater than 15 feet in diameter, usually in paths that I walk. The spider is mostly fuzzy brown with zebra-like black stripes on its bottom side and legs. The abdomen can be greater than 1.5 inches in diameter. I don't know it to be aggressive or otherwise dangerous but its size and prevalence is of some concern, especially at 5am when it is sometimes necessary to be out among them. Robert R.
