[sci.bio] Iodine concentrations in soils/water;Location of "Goiter Belt"

I need information on:

1. Iodine/iodide concentrations in soil and water in the North America,
particularly the U.S.  Either data or references would be useful.  How
much does the level change as a function of location?  Cartographic
representation would be great.

2. In the past (perhaps before the introduction of iodized salt), there
was supposed to be a "goiter belt" in the U.S.  Where was it?  What
states or parts of states?  Has the USGS or other agency ever published
data on the naturally occurring concentrations of various constituents
of soil/water?
