Jon, The original proposal for batch mode SMTP was made by Mike O'Dell while he was here at LBL. He can be reached at mo@lbl-csam.arpa. It turns out that his ideas were adopted for use in BITNET. Maybe someone else on the list can point you to the document describing their batch mode variant. Joe Sventek

What I recall is that the BITNET mailer uses something called BSMTP. Since all they have is file transfer, they transfer a file with the SMTP commands and then get one back with the replies. Solomon from UWISC mentioned it at the gateway meeting. It comes to mind that it was Alan Crosswell from Columbia (EACUS@CUVMB on bitnet) who wrote it. -Ron
