Thanks to all those who sent me information or references for Batch SMTP. It is indeed a batch style use of SMTP to deliver a bunch of messages in one direction and sometime later receive a bunch of responses. It was created and evolved by Mike O'Dell, Greg Minshall, and Alan Crosswell. It is used in some parts of BITNET, particularly at Berkeley. A six page description of it was prepared by Alan Crosswell. --jon. -------

I really must mention here that one of the developers of BSMTP (Batch Simple) is Dr. Robert Owens here at PSU. He wrote it mainly to handle mail through the BITNET, since he also wrote the Unix BITNET software. Unfortunately, it doesn't handle non-smart uucp sites very well so we still run delivermail (or sendmail). -- Spoken: John D.
