People are observing that many host names (specifically those at Berkeley) are not included in the central host table which you still maintain for MILNET. Some people thought MILNET sites should all be running name resolvers so this was not a problem, but the consensus seems to be that the policy is that MILNET sites are not required to do this. Are they even allowed to do this? Erik Fair forwarded a statement of policy to Header People. It states that the NIC will continue to maintain a host table for MILNET. Is there any policy statement which explains how this will happen? Are hosts changing from their .ARPA domain name required to notify Hostmaster@NIC of the new name as well as registering with the particular domain or domains of which they will be a part? Whose "fault" is it that certain Berkeley sites are not in the host table, but are nonetheless transmitting mail to certain MILNET sites who then cannot conveniently deal with the mail? Perhaps people at Berkeley thought they could simply elect not to be a part of the NIC host table, but where does this leave MILNET? -------
