[net.mail.headers] mail from Berkeley hosts

MRC@SIMTEL20.ARPA (Mark Crispin) (10/28/85)

Would somebody PLEASE fix the Berkeley mail software to generate
message headers that Milnet sites can reply to? Milnet is not adopting
domains at the present time; either those sites should be added to the
NIC host table or they should use "%" or some similar kludge.

I am tired of not being able to reply to urgent correspondence. It
is NOT alright to shut off mail access to non-domain sites!

Great, and fix TOPS-20 mailers so they do a date line that
people who obey the RFC can parse.

Here we go again. Let's point the fingers at the keyboards and solve the
problems instead of pointing them at each other and raising our blood
pressure.

And now, a joke: a couple of months back I presented a paper at an
electronic mail conference. For a slide or two I was talking about
header munging and why it was a bad thing. I used a rhyme to sum it all up:

Humpty Dumpty went through a relay,
	  Humpty Dumpty was munged in the melee;
And Hermes, and MH, and Crispin's MM,
Couldn't put Humpty back together again.

(it didn't go over well there either...)
